Bible Resources

Bible:

  • BibleGateway.com. This is a website that has many different translations of the Bible, in many different languages.
  • English Standard Version (ESV). My English translation of choice, because of its philosophy of being the most readable literal translation out there. It is endorsed by pastors and teachers such as John Piper, Jerry Bridges, Francis Chan, Mark Driscoll, Carolyn Mahaney, Al Mohler, Kevin DeYoung, Ravi Zacharias, and R.C. Sproul.
  • Matthew Henry Commentary: Long in the public domain, the Bible commentary of Calvinist exegetical pastor Matthew Henry is of great use to any student, shepherd, or scholar of the Bible.

Media:

  • Resolved Conference. “Resolved” is a conference hosted by Grace Community Church, home of John MacArthur (and, full disclosure, my home while at UCLA, but I promise that does not make me biased), held annually for high school and college age students. The list of speakers changes from year to year, but has included John MacArthur, John Piper, CJ Mahaney, Al Mohler, and Steve Lawson. The audio for seven years of conferences (and the video for three) is available for free download. All of these men are devoted to the glory of God and skilled in their work. I highly, highly recommend these!
  • Together for the Gospel. “Together for the Gospel” is a conference that occurs every two years, where attendees gather for the express purpose of clarifying, defending, and celebrating the Gospel. Speakers include the list from Resolved, as well as Thabiti Anyabwile, Ligon Duncan, R.C. Sproul, and more. Videos of the main sessions are also available, as well as Spanish translations of the main sessions, and audio of smaller “breakout sessions.”
  • Desiring God Conferences. “Desiring God” is the ministry of John Piper. Every year it hosts a few conferences, from Regional to National to Pastors. I am not as familiar with these sermons since the above two give me plenty of great material to listen to, but these messages come with John Piper’s implicit seal of approval, so I have no doubt that there are great messages to be found.
  • Shepherds’ Conference. “Shepherds’ Conference” is another conference hosted by Grace Community Church, targeted at pastors and teachers. Obviously the messages will be geared toward responsible leadership and handling of the Word, but there are still plenty of messages that may interest the layperson. They upload translations in Russian, as well as original messages in Spanish, and they make seminars available for download, as well. Video is available for those who want it. (I’ve listened to some of the Spanish sermons and translations to test and improve my Spanish language skills–and as a plus, they’re interesting and biblical!)
